The Influence of the Beatles

The Beatles are notoriously known for being the band of the 60's as they had a great deal of influence over the American population. However, do you believe their music was the only influence on Americans, or did the fact that they consumed drugs help contribute to the elevated drug use in America during the 1960's?

  1. This question definitely got me thinking. Its like yes and no at the same time. But if I had choose a side... I would say no, the Beatle's drug use did not contribute to the elevated drug use. They simply made good music with a different sound which attracted many people. Regardless, people were consuming drugs. For example, from professor Fink's lecture, we see that people literally held public events whee the sole purpose was to take LSD. The 60's is known as this era of free culture. People didn't act on something because somebody else was was doing it. They did such things because they wanted to. This is exemplified in the protests. Every student participated because they wanted to, and at their own risk knowing the consequences. Thus from this observation, it is safe to say that people did drugs at their own will, not because they were influenced by the Beatles. But being on drugs while listening to the Beatles would have probably been an interesting psychedelic experience.

  2. I think the Beatles had a great influence in America's music style, as well as drug use. Since the Beatles came along, the music style of artists changed, since it was the popular trend. Also, LSD quickly became a popular drug in America and many people were consuming it. In my opinion, because the Beatles consumed drugs, and was one of the most favored bands at the time, it probably attracted more Americans to try LSD.
